Ocasio-Cortez’s visit to Texas comes amid a firestorm for Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who was caught on vacation with his family in Cancun because millions of Texans got stuck in homes without power or safe drinking water . Cruz cut short his trip amid widespread criticism and expressed regret when he returned home.

Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly called for Cruz to resign as he sought to challenge President Biden’s election victory, which was the backdrop for the January 6 riot.

On Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez said she wanted to focus on government officials, especially the women who were on the ground helping people during the disaster. She gave a shout out to the Democratic representatives of Texas. Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee who accompanied her to the food bank.

“They’re here and they’re on the ground. And they help Texans and they knock on doors at their neighbors,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Let’s focus on the people who do the work – on the leaders and the champions.”
