Anthony Edwards has never heard of Alex Rodriguez

The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly on the verge of having a new ownership group that includes former MLB star Alex Rodriguez.

Although Walmart CEO Marc Lore is likely to be the main stakeholder in the reported deal, Rodriguez adds a face and a bit of stellar power to the ownership.

Or one would think.

It turns out that the three-time AL MVP, J-Lo partner and prospective first ballot Hall of Famer do not have quite the same gravitas as before. Just ask Anthony Edwards.

The Timberwolves Rookie of the Year candidate was asked Tuesday if he’s a fan of Rodriguez’s growing up. Here is what he had to say:

“Who is he?”

Edwards: “A fan? Who is he?”

Reporter: “The baseball player? Alex Rodriguez?”

Edwards: “Yes, no. I do not know who it is.”

Edwards: “I know he’s the owner of the plan. But I know nothing about baseball.”

Many thanks to our fearless hero reporter who blessed us with this exchange.

Does it say more about Edwards or baseball?

The reactionary response to Edwards’ answer is as follows: how can anyone in the world of sports and entertainment – or in America at all – not know who Alex Rodriguez is?

But Edwards’ latest statement in the exchange raises another question. How bad is baseball’s connection to American youth?

Edwards is 19 years old. And while it’s shocking to hear a high-profile athlete who has yet to hear from a generational baseball player who just retired in 2016, it’s safe to say Edwards is not alone in his age group. Baseball’s association with Gen Z may be worse than we thought.

A-Rod introduces himself

Rodriguez does not seem to mind the exchange rate. In fact, he uses the opportunity to introduce himself to the player in whose talents he plans to invest.

It did not take Edwards long to say goodbye.
