BioWare has announced that it will permanently halt the development of Anthem Next, which would be a bottom-up transformation, equivalent to No Man’s Sky Next and Destiny: The Taken King. Anthem servers will continue as usual, BioWare confirmed.
It is likely that a variety of factors contributed to BioWare’s decision to end the development of Anthem, but in particular the COVID pandemic and the pressure to work from home are mentioned in Wednesday’s announcement.
‘2020, however, was a year different from any other, and although we continue to progress against all of our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we did before COVID- 19 as a studio planned. can be achieved without putting unnecessary strain on our teams, ‘wrote Christian Dailey, executive producer of Anthem.
EA has apparently been grappling with decisions over the past few weeks about dealing with Anthem’s future. Early last year, the studio dedicated to the complete refurbishment of Anthem, which was intended to provide “a more satisfying outdoor experience, better long-term progression and a more fulfilling endgame.” A recent Bloomberg report described a situation in which EA was unsure whether to fund Anthem Next.
In today’s announcement, Dailey said the decision to cancel Anthem Next was ‘not easy’, but explained that the studio needs all its resources to concentrate on its upcoming games. “To move forward, we need to focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles, while continuing with the updates of Star Wars: The Old Republic,” Dailey said.
