Another devastating day in LA County: 224 new COVID deaths

Goeiemore, LA

For some of us (myself included), the 101 Coffee Shop brought with it the feeling of moving from elsewhere in the country to Los Angeles. The kitsch, the Googie-inspired decor, the celebrities and the vague air of Hollywood secrets make it a unique local experience.

The beloved cafe recently announced that it will close forever due to losses related to pandemic. I’m not alone for a long time mourning over the news, but as my colleague Elina Shatkin points out that the 101 is not the only historic eatery that announced its closure while the coronavirus continues.

Wah’s Golden Hen in Virgil Village has been around for 48 years. Unlike the 101, whose closure some speculative Twitter users speculated about before it was confirmed to Eater LA, Wah’s owners announced the end of their run with a note pinned to the front door of the restaurant.

“Just over 30 years ago, we came to America with a lot of hopes and dreams,” it reads in part. “We soon joined the family business at Golden Hen, where we would raise our children and see many of our dreams come true and more.”
