Another 11 Mainers were killed when health officials reported another 701 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday.
The number of cases of coronavirus diagnosed across the country in the past 14 days is 7,898. This is an estimate of the current number of active cases in the state, as the Maine CDC no longer detects recovery for all patients. This is Tuesday, higher than 7,721.
It was a sharp increase in new cases after three consecutive days when they fell below 400, the longest sustained decline Maine has seen in recent weeks. Nevertheless, Wednesday’s report is far from the dizzying heights reached last week – including an overall high of 824 -.
Five Cumberland County residents, a Kennebec County resident, four Penobscot County residents and a York County resident succumbed to the virus, bringing the death toll across the country to 530.
Maine’s average for seven days for new cases of coronavirus is 546.4, compared to 564 a day ago and 581.7 a week ago, but compared to 436 a month ago.
The new case rate nationwide is 5.24 cases per 10,000 inhabitants and the total case rate is 261.23.
According to the report from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine is brought to 34,963 on Wednesday. This is from 34,262 on Tuesday.
Of these, 28,253 were confirmed positive, while 6,440 were classified as ‘probable cases’, the CDC reported in Maine.

So far, 1,287 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Of these, 198 Mainers were admitted to the hospital, with 71 in critical care and 37 in a ventilator. There are still 39 critical care beds available, and out of 320, there are still 213 fans available. The number of available alternative fans is 443.
The total hospitalization rate in the whole country on Wednesday is 9.62 patients per 10,000 inhabitants.
Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (3,847), Aroostook (1,062), Cumberland (10,128), Franklin (603), Hancock (704), Kennebec (2,685), Knox (525), Lincoln (407), Oxford ( 1 657), Penobscot (3,031), Piscataquis (174), Sagadahoc (653), Somerset (990), Waldo (440), Washington (527) and York (7,516) provinces. Information on where 14 more cases were reported was not immediately available.

An additional 2,793 Mainers were vaccinated against the coronavirus in the past day and 1,699 received their second dose. As of Wednesday, 71,707 Mainers had received one dose of vaccine, while 14,140 had received two doses.
New Hampshire reported 845 new cases and five deaths on Wednesday. Vermont reported 101 new cases and no deaths, and Massachusetts reported more than 3,000 new cases and 44 deaths.
As of Wednesday night, the coronavirus had infected 24,382,311 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands, and caused 404,898 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University Medicine.
According to Bloomberg, 16.3 million doses of the vaccine were administered nationwide.
