The Chiefs clinched the AFC’s No. 1 position on Sunday, meaning they have the only playoff game of the conference this season.

Head coach Andy Reid is giving some of his players another week off.

‘There are certain guys who have a opportunity to rest, ”Reid said Monday via Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. ‘I’ve done this in the past. I reassured players, yes. ”

Per Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star, Reid emphasized that the Chiefs are a veteran group that will not forget the plays. In addition, many of them can use the break after experiencing the wear and tear of the season.

Reid’s history with resting players goes back a long way, but when he did so in 2017, quarterback Patrick Mahomes made his first start against the Broncos. That was before everyone knew how good Mahomes would be and Kansas City won that game 27-24.

Mahomes is expected to be one of the players resting for the Chargers’ annual trip to the west on Sunday. Although Reid did not specify exactly who was going to rest, he said Chad Henne would be the club’s fullback if Mahomes did not play.
