Android Auto adds wallpapers and a smart Assistant shortcut feature

Android Auto has evolved beautifully over the last few years, with Google adding everything from a dark mode to a dynamic persistent navigation bar at the bottom of the user interface. However, one area that the platform is missing is in the wallpaper section. Fortunately, that is changing from today.

After seeing evidence that Google was getting ready to launch wallpapers in Android Auto, several users on Reddit claim that the feature is about to launch. The wallpapers seem to roll out via an update on the server side, although Android Auto v6.0 + has been installed by many users. Unfortunately, users do not allow the updated customization options to select an image from their camera roll. Google may allow users to add their own backgrounds in a future update.

Many of the backgrounds are dark and moody, some have landscapes and others detailed photos of learning interiors. They convey a nice abstract aesthetic that fits well with the design of Android Auto. To change your wallpaper, go to the Settings app on the Android Auto Home screen, then scroll down until you see the “Select Wallpaper” option. Apple’s CarPlay has introduced wallpapers before, so it’s no surprise to see Google follow suit.

Google is also introducing a new feature in Android Auto that allows users to add a shortcut to start a Google Assistant query. This includes quickly making contact or activating an assistant action, such as opening your garage or going home. It gives a little convenience and makes Android Auto feel more like an extension of your smartphone, rather than a separate system.

Google has not posted a blog post or tweeted about the new Android Auto features, so it looks like their arrival is low. Our advice is to update to the latest version of the app and see if the new wallpapers are available. If you do not see the update immediately, it will probably be available soon.
