Android 12’s nickname may be Snow Cone, but we thought of 17 better

We’re eagerly awaiting official news about Android 12, Google’s next major update for its mobile operating system, and we may have just got an early look at some major UI changes last week, thanks to XDA Developers. But now, thanks again XDA Developers, we may know something more important: the name of Android 12’s dessert.

For years, Android releases have also been identified with recitals, and each year’s dessert began with the next consecutive letter in the alphabet. Google left the aftermath in favor of figures with Android 10, but the company reportedly still uses the aftermath internally. Android’s nickname was apparently Red Velvet Cake, for example. Android 12’s name? XDA Developers says it’s Snow Cone.

Snow Cone is … good. But if I’m honest with you, I can not remember the last time I ate a snow cone. And ‘Snow Cone’ doesn’t immediately make me water like some of Google’s other classics, like ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’.

The skeleton crew at The edge this good Monday (it’s a federal holiday here in the US) felt we could do better. So we thought of 17 other nicknames starting with “S”, which we think would be more enjoyable for Android 12:

  • S’mores
  • Salted Caramel
  • Saltwater Taffy
  • Leaf cake
  • Sponge cake
  • Strawberry shortcake
  • Shortbread
  • Souffle
  • Sundae
  • Sherbet
  • Gently serve
  • Stracciatella
  • Sugar cookie
  • Samoas
  • Snickerdoodle
  • Streusel
  • Waffle with syrup

I hope you’re hungry after reading all the names, because I’m sure.

Other recent reports may indicate other new rumors about Android 12. According to XDA Developers“We have learned that Google has referred to some of the changes to the notice’s user interface internally as the beginning of the ‘Road to Material NEXT’ ‘, which may suggest broader changes to Google’s material design guidelines. There may also be changes to the Pattern Unlock UI, the Quick Settings panel and more in Android 12.

Google may implement a one-handed mode for Android 12, XDA Developers also reported. And Google may be introducing a way for Pixel phones to see which side your head is facing to prevent your screen from turning sideways on your bed, for example.
