One feature we would have according to Android 12 is the One-handed mode, which makes your phone shrink to be more accessible with your thumb. Here’s our first look at One – handed mode in action on Android 12 Developer Preview 1.
As we reported earlier this week, One-handed mode is an emerging feature for Android 12 aimed at enabling those with longer phones to use their phone with one hand. To do this, Android simply shrinks the screen vertically and brings the highest part of the phone closer to your thumb. While the one-handed mode was not publicly launched with Android 12, our Dylan Roussel feature was able to give us all a taste of how it works.
Android 12’s one-handed mode is almost identical to iOS’s accessibility and is invoked with a simple downward move on the motion navigation bar. As explained in the manual, you can tap outside the shrink screen or swipe the gesture bar to get your phone back to normal.
While in standby mode, you can use your phone as normal and switch between applications while staying in a shortened state. Alternatively, by turning a switch, the one-handed mode may shut down as soon as you switch off program. It also works by default if you do not touch your phone for eight seconds.
Overall, the one-handed mode looks like a simple, straightforward feature that comes in handy for the extra long phones in your life. Since we are still early in the Android 12 development cycle, it is too early to say whether the one-handed mode will really start by the time Android 12 is introduced to the public.
