Android 12 DP2: Media player UI uses system accent color

With the release of Android 12 Developer Preview 12, Google is changing the media player UI accent color to suit your system theme, rather than any content playing.

While this may not be a big change at first glance, it does change the importance of certain parts of your device. Changes will be most important noticed on your lock screen, where the change seems strongest. Android 12 DP1 has actually customized a few layouts, but it’s just a change in the color of the media player UI, with the same functionality retained.

To summarize: if you select / select an accent color for a system theme within the ‘Style and Backgrounds’ section, your selected color will be used for any quick setting changers, Settings pages, and now the accent color will apply to the UI and lock screen media player.

Previously, almost every single media player section on your Pixel would be used as a theme direct according to the color of the content currently being played. For example, an album with maroon / red cover art has a player with an accent to mimic the main color palette. You can see on the screenshots below that when a green color is used now, the album art or video content is more easily visible. It also works well with any color in the style and background section:

The original leaks of the Android 12 UI showed early signs of this color-themed ‘core’ system, but while some sections of the earlier previews of developers have yet to be tamed, the media player is an excellent candidate.
