Android 12 can revamp split-screen multitasking with ‘App Pairs’

Google is reportedly working on a revamped multitasking feature that will allow users to launch app pairs in Android 12.

In Android 11, there is a split screen feature that allows users to use two apps side by side. But the feature is a bit awkward to perform, so Google is exploring other ideas.

According to 9to5Google, the search giant is undergoing a complete overhaul of the split screen system in Android 12 with a new feature called ‘App Pairs.’ In Android 12, App Pairs will group two apps to use as one task.

“What this means is that you can choose two of your recent apps to become a pair,” 9to5Google said. “Once you’ve paired it, you could easily swap with another app and then swap back to the pair you created.”

9to5Google has made mockups to show what Android 12 app pairs can look like

We’ve seen other companies introduce app pairing features, so Google’s feature will be nothing new. Samsung has introduced one of the best solutions – also known as App Pairs – that allows users to create custom shortcuts for two apps of their choice. It is unclear whether the App Pairs feature of Android 12 will also offer the same flexibility.

According to 9to5Google’s information, Android 12’s App Pairs system will include a distributor that users can customize. “This splitter actually gets a little more functionality, allowing you to quickly swap the positions of your two programs by double-tapping the splitter.”

We may soon be able to get a look at what Android 12 has in store. Last year, the first Android 11 Developer Preview was released in mid-February, which is about a month away. If Google sticks to a similar schedule, we can see App Pairs in action in just a few weeks.

If you’re currently looking for a possible look at the rumored App Pairs feature of Android 12, 9to5Google created a useful mockup that we included above.
