The developers of Between us on Tuesday dropped a line to thank fans for their patience and explain why new developments in the upcoming multiplayer hit are slowly getting underway.
‘Between us got incredible traction pretty late in 2020 which we did not expect, and it meant a LOT of change for us, ‘InnerSloth wrote on the studio’s official blog. ‘We did not just have to go back to work Between us after we thought it was done, but we also had to set ourselves more sustainably to work on the game. ”
Between us was launched on Windows PC in November 2018, but it became a social game hit in quarantine culture after the best Twitch streamers started streaming it during the summer. The additional hiring and organization needed to accept post-release support for the game has eaten up several months, InnerSloth said. It also meant that the studio would no longer be working on a sequel in September, to ensure players on new platforms were not hampered by the original game.
“There are a lot of other things that are out of our control (legal issues, meetings, planning), so sometimes these things also take longer,” reads the blog post.
Between us also made its console debut with the Nintendo Switch in December, which involves certification and processes in addition to supporting the original game after its launch. InnerSloth, based in Redmond, Washington, has four employees. “We have help from our porting partners for that,” the studio said, “but it still means we need to make sure that future things we do are supported on these platforms.”
Between us is set to launch on Xbox One and Xbox Series X this year and is already available for Xbox Game Pass for PC subscribers. At The Game Awards 2020 on December 10, Innersloth announced that a new card, Airship, will join the game.
