By the end of the weekend, at least nine more people had died from gun violence during shootings across the country – in Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska and Louisiana. At least 10 others were injured.
According to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Spicuzza, a 7-year-old girl was killed Sunday afternoon in a shooting in Chicago that also seriously injured a 29-year-old man.
In a statement sent by CNN by e-mail, Spicuzza said the two were in a vehicle near the parking lot of a business when they were hit around 4:18 p.m.
The statement said the girl was hit several times and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The man was hit in the upper body and was admitted to hospital in a serious condition.
The shooting is being investigated. No one is in custody, the statement said.
Austin, Texas
Police, fire and emergency services in Austin responded to the Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway area in the city around 11:42 a.m., where they found three people sustained gunshot wounds, officials said.
Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old Stephen Nicholas Broderick, a former sheriff’s detective in Travis County who was charged with sexually assaulting a child last year, a sheriff’s spokesman told CNN.
The victims – two women and a man – knew Broderick, according to Joseph Chacon, interim police chief. A child was involved in the incident but was tracked down and is safe.
Broderick resigned from the sheriff last year after his arrest in June, and he was released later that month.
He remained at large on Sunday night.
Kenosha, Wisconsin
According to Sheriff David G. Beth, the Somers House tavern broke out at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, saying it “sounds like one person was removed from the business and may have returned a short while later” and started shooting.
It was unclear why the person was initially removed, the sheriff said.
According to the sheriff, officials on Sunday night located a “person of interest” who will be charged with one count of first-degree murder, with additional charges possibly pending further investigation.
Dozens of law enforcement officers from at least seven agencies and eight firefighters were involved in the case, which involved several crime scenes, the sheriff said.
Columbus, Ohio
According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, a small group gathered in the parking lot of a Dollar General to remember Jarrin Hickman, who was killed there a year ago.
A dark-colored sports utility vehicle passed by around 7:30 p.m., the sheriff said. The people inside started shooting at the crowd. Five people were hit by gunfire and were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 39-year-old Latoya Carpenter died when she drove through the store, the sheriff’s office said. A bullet hit Carpenter in the head and her vehicle crashed into a parked car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the news release, no suspects are in custody, and the shooting is still under investigation.
Omaha, Nebraska
Police have arrested two people in connection with the shooting: a 16-year-old was arrested for first-degree murder, while an 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder .
The shooting took place around noon, Omaha police lieutenant Neal Bonacci said, sending customers, including Celia Davis, to seek cover.
As they hid, Davis said she texted her mother and her boyfriend, “I love you.”
LaPlace, Louisiana
Six people were injured after someone opened fire during a 12-year-old birthday party in LaPlace, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans.
The shooting began “when verbal confrontations led to gunfire during a child’s birthday party,” officials said.
The sheriff’s office said he was not aware of the deaths related to the shooting on Saturday, and that no arrests had been made yet.
