Between the terrifying collapse of a contestant and an equally terrifying performance by future wife Kellyanne Conway, Monday American Idol was full of surprises.
But before we dive into the results, here’s a quick reminder of the notable names we lost Sunday: Ammon Olayan, Brianna Collichio, Cameron McGhar, Celeste Butler, Christian McGuckian, Christian Terry, DJ Johnson, Erika Perry, James Perdue, Liv Grace. Blue, Mason Picks, She Nova, Trinity Rose, Tryzdin Grubbs, Vahhley and Yurisbel. (I would say they will all be remembered … but it’s season 19, so let’s not make ourselves kids.)
Those left over were paired by the judges (plot twist!) For a series of duels that changed the game. Read on for a full breakdown of Monday’s results, including videos of the evening’s best performances:
LAILA MACH & LIAHONA OLAYAN | During the rehearsal process of this couple, Liahona repeatedly emphasized how sad she was that her older brother was eliminated on Sunday. Katy Perry tried to convince her to put those feelings aside and fight for her brother, but from the look on Liahona’s face during her and Laila’s performance of Rihanna’s “Stay,” it was clear that she could not overcome her sadness. Note the harshest words Perry has ever said on this show: “Liahona, do you want to be here? She asked. “You do? You’re not showing it. There are other people behind me who want it more, and they’re fighting to get it, and you’re wasting everyone’s time.” She accused Liahona of jeopardizing Laila’s dreams. and that he was “really selfish.” Finally, Perry told the Liahona to stop sabotaging herself … before sending both ladies to the next round.
CAMERON ALLEN & GRAHAM DEFRANCO | ‘Watermelon Sugar’ was a make-or-break song for several singers on Monday, starting with this duo’s cool, coffee house version of the Harry Styles jam. That was enough to send Graham through, but Cameron’s news was not so sweet.
BEANE & KARI ERICKSON | Styles’ Grammy-winning song was just as divisive for this couple, who simply “did not deliver as they should”. Beane managed to impress the judges enough to advance to the next round, while Kari was cut out of the competition. And on this note, Perry announced: ‘We’re all officially banned from singing’ Watermelon Sugar ‘. “
ANTHONY GUZMAN & ADRIEL CARRION | Unlike his Viking duet partner, Adriel was relatively unknown to Idol audiences before Hollywood Week. But we will not forget the duo’s performance of – wait for it – “Watermelon Sugar”, which not only brought his and Anthony’s opposite voices together in a glorious harmony, but also changed Perry’s thoughts to the song on to hear. Idol. It was truly a win for everyone, especially since both guys were sent through.
MADISON WATKINS & DESHAWN GONCALVES | Several duet partners came close through this experience, but few people had much like these two, who talked about matching tattoos before taking the stage for an incredible performance of ‘Stay’. As Lionel Richie told them: ‘It was a experience. You have two very powerful voices, and your chemistry together was a slam dunk. ‘No surprise here: both singers made it through. Look:
CLAUDIA CONWAY & HANNAH EVERHART | These two singers “from totally different worlds” struggled to find a common ground before their duet – especially when Claudia had to go look for Hannah, who explained that she had problems with people her own age because she was an ‘old soul ‘is. Eventually they worked things out, but that did not help with the execution of Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” which was simply unpleasant to the ear. Still, the judges saw enough potential in Hannah to send her through, while Claudia’s Idol journey has come to an end.
ALEX MILLER & EMISUNSHINE | Luke Bryan tried to steer this folksy duo away from Johnny Cash’s “Walk the Line”, and felt that Alex should break out of his old-fashioned comfort zone and need EmiSunshine’s chance to deliver big notes. But they chose to ignore the judge’s recommendation, a risk that paid off with a performance that absolutely killed them. Bryan could not even come up with any criticism other than EmiSunshine who had to tone down her falsetto a bit and send them both to the next round.
MURPHY & LIZZY ALLES | I did not think I could love Murphy anymore … until he joined Lizzy to be barefoot for their appropriately dreamy rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”. I’m a big fan of Lizzy’s beautiful, ethereal sound, and I’m a big fan of Murphy in general. When I saw him jump for joy when I heard that he and Lizzy were continuing, I appreciated how many sides of Murphy we’ve been lucky enough to experience – and I can not wait to see more.
CASSANDRA COLEMAN & WYATT PIKE | Like two professionals, these two took the stage in perfect balance and absolutely crushed Alex Clare’s “Too Close”. There was a timelessness in their combined sound that made me Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Sand rearing. The success was that she overcame her fear, and that he supported her as a duet partner, and they both advanced to the next round. Look:
MONICA LEAH & MIGUELA | There’s a reason we’ve not heard much of these two yet, which proved it just because you can hit a crazy high note … that does not mean you should. ‘It was a classic example of what you do not want to do, ”Richie said, explaining that their performance was a duel rather than a duet. Unfortunately, both women were cut.
RONDA FELTON & FUNKE LAGOKE | The twists and turns in this performance, my goodness! First, Ronda received a visit from her inner saboteur to quote the great RuPaul. She admitted that she felt she did not deserve to be there, which Funke opposed with words of inspiration and encouragement that really spoke to Ronda. Unfortunately, their performance of Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion’s “Tell Him” was a train wreck of poor timing, missing lyrics and bundled nerves. And while receiving criticism, poor Funke fainted on stage, bursting her chin and being brought to the hospital with a stretcher. (Click here to watch the terrifying ordeal.) While Ronda sobbed in the audience, the judges informed her that she and Funke had come through, despite the problems with their duet.
WILLIE SPENCE & KYA MONEY | Willie admitted that she performed on stage under ‘a lot of pressure’ after a crisis, but we needed good music to clear our minds after Funke’s terrifying ordeal – and these two delivered. Willie killed it from the jump and harnessed so much emotion and power in his voice. When the couple’s harmony skyrocketed, the judges stood up, and Perry sobbed at the end of the incredible performance. “It was divine,” Richie told Willie and Kya before sending them both through. “It was an experience. You broke us. ‘Look:
BEN DODSON & HENRY THOMPSON | Our time with these guys was short, but between the matching haircut and the solid performance of Shawn Mendes’ ‘Mercy’, they gave us (and the judges) very little to dislike. I’m curious to see more of them.
JAZZY ROSE & RE’H | Unfortunately, there is no “line” for any of these singers, which the judges simply undercut with Maren Morris’ “Common”. It ended better than it started, but the judges agreed that they had more life experience, and it both hurt.
ZACHARY D’ONOFRIO & SLOANE SIMON | Catie Turner is not going to be happy about this one. Her boo was linked to cheerleader Sloane in the hope that the opposite could attract, but the end result was not the. Bobby Bones warned Zachary that he would fall into the role of Sloane’s backup singer, which eventually led to his undoing. Hey, Sloane at least got through!
CHAYCE BECKHAM & CHRISTINA DAUGHERTY | These two had an immediate commitment, one that only grew as they worked together to perfect their onslaught on Noah Cyrus’ “July.” Unfortunately, the bet only made it more devastating when Christina – whose good performance was simply overshadowed by Chayce’s big one – learned that she had been eliminated. “It hurts my heart,” Chayce said of his partner’s action, and Katy Perry certainly shared in his pain. Look:
SAMANTHA SHARPE & ALANA | We could not see what became of these two, but based on the fact that Samantha started again two times, we have to assume that none of it came through. (Sorry, Alana! It was right that you looked so annoyed.)
ALTHEA GENADE & KAMILLE LAM | It was another stressful performance. Althea felt no connection with Camille from the jump, which made her wonder why she was wasting her time on Idol instead of being home with her daughter. And things only got worse when she learned that her daughter was in an emergency to have her feeding tube fixed. Fortunately, Althea managed to channel all of her emotions into a beautiful duet of “You Don’t Own Me.” She and Camille not only eat this song – they chew it up, digest it and drop it back on stage immediately. It was easily one of the best duets of the night, and they both absolutely deserved to go through.
AVA AUGUST & JAGTER METTS | They may not know who Ryan Phillippe is (this show makes me feel so old!), But both know how to set up a show. And although the judges felt that Ava and Hunter played it too safe with their easy cover of ‘Dancing On My Own’, they could not deny the beauty of their voices, and both passed on to the next round.
ALYSSA WRAY & GRACE ARTISTS | It was the duet I was most looking forward to, and these power stations did not disappoint and provided a cover of ‘Grenade’ so well, that it blew me back to 2010. (Do you remember 2010? Good times.) In each case, their voice sounded incredible both individually and in those sweet, sweet harmonies – and I would like to declare myself here and now Grace as the winner of season 19. Some of these notes! These two sail through to the next round, and I can not wait to see what they bring us on Sunday. Look:
Here are the big names we said goodbye to on Monday: Cameron Allen, Christina Daugherty, Claudia Conway, Jazzy Rose, Kari Erickson, Miguela, Monica Leah, Re’h and Zachary D’Onofrio. (I also assume that Alana and Samantha Sharpe were eliminated.)
