Amazon will hire 3,000 corporate employees in Boston, continues US expansion

Amazon.com Inc. plans to add 3,000 employees in the Boston area to its corporate ranks, one of a number of expanding technology positions in major U.S. cities for the company.

The online retailer said the jobs would be spread across support teams from the Alexa-smart speaker system to Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy, a new business unit launched in November. The jobs will include roles in technology and software development.

The rental plans in Boston contribute to one of the recent expansions for Amazon, which is the country’s second largest employer, with more than 800,000 people in the US. The company experienced unparalleled growth last year, adding more than 400,000 employees, bringing its global workforce to more than 1.1 million. The company has added thousands of jobs to corporate offices in the United States, including major hubs such as New York, San Diego and Dallas.

The expansion of the company into numerous U.S. cities comes nearly two years after plans to closely monitor part of a second headquarters in New York crumbled after the setback of some local, state and congressional officials and activists over the project, which is about $ 3 billion in tax incentives.

Amazon said it is renting a 17-story office building in the Seaport development in Boston to accommodate its growing workers in the city. The company said it was not receiving any new financial incentives for the expansion.
