Amazon Unveils Striking Helix Office Tower for Virginia Headquarters

Amazon on Tuesday unveiled plans for the next phase of the redevelopment of its Virginia headquarters, with a distinctive 350-foot (107-meter) helical office tower that can be climbed from the outside like a mountain step.

The head-turning helix building is at the heart of the proposal, which also includes several 22-storey office buildings, in addition to the buildings already under construction, as the company wants to house 25,000 new workers in the coming years in the Potomac River area. from the capital of the country.

The Seattle company said in a blog post that the building was designed to help people connect with nature.

“The natural beauty of a double helix can be seen all over our world, from the geometry of our own DNA to the elemental form of galaxies, weather patterns, pinecones and seashells,” the company said. “The Helix at our headquarters in Arlington offers a variety of alternative work environments for Amazon employees amidst lush gardens and flowering trees in the region.”

Sketches show trees and green space running along the outside of the building, which in addition to a helix also looks like a Christmas tree or an ice cream cone. Less flattering comments on social media compare it to a poop emoji.

The company said it would open the outside of the mountain climb to tourists over the weekend.

The building is considered by the company as an ‘alternative work space’, in contrast to the more traditional office space in the three 22-storey buildings that surround the helix, which will be slightly higher than the other three buildings.

Because skyscrapers are banned in the District of Columbia, and the Amazon buildings will be among the tallest in Arlington County, the helix from some vantage points will dominate the region’s skyline like no other building than the Washington Monument.

In a statement, Matt de Ferranti, chairman of the Arlington County Board, called the helicopter design “interesting” and said provincial residents would have a chance to inform the design before it was approved.
