Amazon suspends Parler from web hosting service: reports

According to several media reports, Amazon has suspended the social media platform Parler from its web hosting service.

The company, founded by Jeff BezosThe richest people of Jeffrey (Jeff) Preston BezosWorld added .8T to their combined wealth in 2020., said Parler’s lack of moderation led to it being removed from its web hosting service. It calls it a ‘very real risk to public safety’, according to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the WSJ, Parler will only be available to users of web hosting services until 23:59 PST on Sunday.

Amazon is the latest technology giant to take steps to limit the social networking app favored by conservatives and right-wing groups due to lack of content moderation. The online retailer follows in the footsteps of Apple, which suspended the Parler app on Saturday morning, and Google, which removed the platform from its app store on Friday night.

The suspension of Parler’s Amazon account means the app is in danger of going offline Sunday night, according to Buzzfeed News.

Parler was recently scrutinized following the violent attacks on the American Capitol after various media reported that Parler was used to help coordinate the riots.

The Trust and Security Team of Amazon Web Services (AWS) sent an email to Amler Peikoff, Parler’s Chief Policy Officer, explaining their decision.

“Recently, we’ve seen a steady increase in this violent content on your site, all of which violate our terms,” reads the email Buzzfeed received. “It is clear that Parler does not have an effective process to meet the AWS Terms of Service.”

The email indicates when the suspension will take effect.

‘[W]e cannot provide services to a customer who cannot effectively identify and remove content that encourages or incites violence against others. Because Parler is unable to meet our conditions of service and poses a real risk to public safety, we plan to set up Parler’s account on Sunday, January 10 at 11:59 PM PST. ”
