Allegheny County dropped nearly 40% in January in new cases

Allegheny County saw a 39% decrease in new cases by 19% in January compared to December.

The latest report from the Department of Health shows a total of 15,559 cases reported in January. In December, health officials reported 25,405 new cases.

In January, there were an average of 502 newly reported cases per day compared to 820 per day in December.

On Monday, the health department reported 169 new cases – the lowest one-day report since November 2 (120). In the past two days, 402 new cases have been reported in Allegheny County, down 35% from a week ago (620).

From 1 to 15 January, the province recorded 9,549 new cases, and from 16 to 31 January, there were 6,010.

Of the 402 newly reported cases, 366 were confirmed by 2,100 new PCR tests – ranging from December 14 to Sunday. According to the province, one of the positive tests was from December, while four were more than a week old.

Among the new cases, 36 are listed as likely. Health officials define a probable case as a case in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a ‘high risk’ exposure ‘to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.

The latest cases in the country range from 2 months to 99 years, with a median of 42 years.

Among the most recent cases – 211 women, 191 men – are the age distribution:

• Ages 0-4: 13

• Ages 5-12: 19

• Ages 13-18: 16

• Ages 19-24: 41

• Ages 25-49: 144

• Ages 50-64: 84

• Ages 65 and older: 85

The province has reported one new death in relation to covid in the last two days – from 10 January. Officials said the person was over 100 years old and was attached to a long-term care facility.

Since the pandemic began in March, the province’s health department has reported a total of 1,454 covid-19 deaths. The Department of Health puts the death of Allegheny County at 1,521, a difference attributed to different reporting methods.

Despite the different reporting methods, the provincial and state’s numbers reflect a lower covid mortality rate in January compared to December. According to the province, 556 people died in December. By January 21 – the most recent data available in the country – 109 died in January. The state reports that 608 residents of Allegheny County died in December, while 314 died in January (using figures through Saturday).

Hospitalizations also dropped significantly in the first month of 2021.

The month began with 697 provincial residents hospitalized with covid, ending with 311 – a 55% decrease. Among the patients in intensive care units, the number rose from 238 to 89, and for those who were on a ventilator, it went from 87 to 35.

According to the Open Data PA website, there are currently 313 residents of Allegheny County hospitalized with covid-19, of which 75 are in ICUs and 32 in a ventilator.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 69,537 cases of covid-19 in Allegheny County, with 55,192 confirmed by PCR tests. There were 337,918 residents who tested negative for the virus.
