Allegheny County had a slight increase in cases and hospitalizations on Thursday, and a higher-than-usual death toll was reported.
Westmoreland County has seen a decline in both cases and hospitalizations and two new deaths. In the state of Pennsylvania, cases and deaths are stable, while hospitalizations continue to decline.
Allegheny county
Allegheny County on Thursday reported 240 additional coronavirus cases (174 confirmed cases) and 19 new coronavirus deaths.
The additional cases of coronavirus have brought the province’s total to 79,154 since the start of the pandemic last year.
The number of deaths in Allegheny County due to covid-19 stands at 1,722.
After no new deaths were reported on Wednesday, the province’s health department said the dates of new deaths reported range from February 17 to last Saturday.
This is the second day this month that the number of deaths is higher than usual. On March 3, the province reported 17 deaths, but every second day of the month there was a report of nine or fewer. Several days, two or fewer deaths were reported.
Of the new deaths reported Thursday: one person was in their thirties; three were in their 40s; two were in their 50s; four were in their 60s; four were in their 70s; three were in their 80s; and two were in their 90s. Two of the deaths were related to a long-term care facility.
According to state data, 172 residents of Allegheny County are being hospitalized due to covid (five as of Wednesday), 48 of them are in intensive care units and 17 of them are in ventilators.
The state reported that 149,999 provincial residents received at least one dose of a vaccine, while 102,367 individuals were fully vaccinated.
On Wednesday, hoping to halt an increase in business, Allegheny County officials asked people not to gather this weekend to visit St. Louis.
“We know that this virus spreads very effectively when you take off your masks, you get close to people, you scream, you scream, you sing,” said dr. Debra Bogen, health director of the province, said during a virtual press briefing. “My recommendation is that you keep it small when you go to a St. Patty’s Day celebration.”
Westmoreland county
In Westmoreland County, there were 59 additional cases and two deaths reported Thursday.
With the additional cases (32 confirmed, 27 likely), the total number of cases in Westmoreland County is at 27,428 (19,271 confirmed, 8,157 likely) since the first cases were reported last year.
The two additional deaths associated with covid bring the total number of covid deaths in the province to 688.
According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, 115 Westmoreland County residents are being hospitalized for covid-19 (less than three as of Wednesday), two are in intensive care units and no one is in ventilators.
The state reported that 39,563 residents of Westmoreland County received at least one dose of a vaccine, while 27,822 individuals were fully vaccinated.
Pennsylvania
The state Department of Health on Thursday reported 2,652 additional cases of coronavirus and 51 new deaths from coronavirus in the state. There are 1,494 people in the state who are currently hospitalized due to the virus.
The state’s seven-day average of cases is at 2,420 cases, and the seven-day total of cases is 16,943, down 8.1% from last Thursday’s figures.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania is 958,382.
Of the 51 deaths just reported on Thursday, 38 are from March, 11 from February and two from January. The total number of deaths in the state due to the coronavirus stands at 24,490.
According to the state’s data, the number of residents admitted to the hospital due to the virus is 1,494, which is less than Wednesday. Hospitalizations have fallen by 73% since the beginning of the year – on 1 January there were 5,624 people in hospital due to the disease, on 1 February there were 3 280 and on 1 March there were 1 715.
After vaccinating one million people in the state on Wednesday, the state reported that 1,113,152 people had received at least one dose of a vaccine, and 1,065,160 had been completely vaccinated.
