After picking Dwayne Haskins and seeing Kyle Allen undergo an ankle injury, the Washington Football Team turned to Alex Smith as their starting quarterback.
It was Smith’s first time in the role since the 2018 leg injury that threatened his life and career, but he was able to do well enough that Washington won five of its six starting lineup and won the NFC East title. While Smith was on hand for the team, Smith told Clay Skipper GQ that he did not feel too welcome when he first told the team he was going to try to play again.
Smith said the team “never thought I would come back” and that “it was not like open arms” when he said he intended to act again.
“When I decided to come back, I definitely threw a key in the plan’s plan,” Smith said. ‘They did not see it, did not want me there, did not want me to be a part of it, and did not want me to be in the team, and did not want to give me a chance. Note, it was a whole new regime, they came in, I’m like the leftovers and I’m hurt and I’m this liability. Heck no, they did not want me there. At that point, as you can imagine, everything I went through, I could not care less. Whether you like it or not, I’m giving it a try at this point. ‘
Smith had a guaranteed salary of $ 16 million last season, so there was little reason for Washington not to give him a chance once he was approved to play. He remains under contract for 2021, but the team will only take $ 8.6 million from his $ 23.3 million cap if they decide to go without him.
There was no word on their plans and Smith did not say anything definitive in the interview about his plans for play in 2021, but he did repeat that he believes he has more to do on the field.
