Alderson: Mets Still Loosely Engaged With George Springer

Talk to Jon Heyman of MLB Network on his podcast (Big Time Baseball Podcast), The president of the New York Mets team, Sandy Alderson, gave an update on current affairs George Springer sage.

Springer (31) fits the needs of New York on a tea. A capable midfielder with a powerful bat probably meets the criteria of any team, but the Connecticut native appeared all winter to land in Flushing.

The Toronto Blue Jays were Springer’s most visible suitor outside the Mets, but except for the two teams, there was not much (publicly known) traction to speak of yet.

Plus, with the addition of Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco for the payroll this season, there are still some gaps to be filled, and upcoming extensions for Lindor, Michael Conforto, and probably others, the Mets may not be in such a strong position as before.

Although, as Alderson noted on Heyman’s podcast, the Mets and Springer are still watching each other.

‘Given the level of excitement [and] “Enthusiasm around the Mets, I do not think we have been removed from his list,” said Alderson. “I would say we’re still working on Springer in a loose sense.”

With a hole in the midfield yet to be filled and a clear interest on both sides, everyone might be playing just a little hard to get. Par for the course this time of year.
