“It’s really un-American,” Gore said Monday during an appearance on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon as he discussed the GOP’s efforts to impose greater voting restrictions, including restricting absenteeism.

“This is a naked attempt to suppress black, brown and indigenous voices,” the former Democratic vice president claimed.

Gore argued that the benefits to the U.S. are when more people with diverse experiences and perspectives are involved, and pushed back on efforts to limit absenteeism, amid other constraints.

“There is no record of voter fraud. One or two small cases every now and then,” he declared.

“We must invite everyone to the ballot box and everyone must take part in leading this nation,” he added.

The left-wing Brennan Center for Justice said last month that lawmakers in dozens of states have pushed forward this year with bills seeking to restrict votes.

Gore stressed on Monday that instead of making the vote more difficult, especially for marginalized populations, the U.S. should take other steps to expand access to the vote.

“We need to vote on a working day on weekends instead of Tuesday,” said Gore, who launched a national voter registration campaign in 2020 in partnership with the Climate Reality Action Fund.

Democrats have long insisted on automatic voter registration, with several states, including New York, New Mexico, Nevada and Massachusetts, taking measures to allow the practice in recent years. These automatic voter registration measures are based on an “opt-out” system instead of an “opt-in” plan.

Hawaii introduced a measure last month that would automatically allow voters to register when applying for a driver’s license or state identification card.
