Against snowmobile build snow cave to wait for rescue

100 MILE HOUSE, British Columbia (CNN) – Canadian authorities say a missing teenager was found alive, thanks in part to his survival skills.

Officials say the 17-year-old was snowboarding on Saturday when he was separated from three family members.

After getting lost, the teenager dug a snow cave in a tree pit and sank down with food and water to wait to be rescued.

It took crew members more than four hours to locate him and he was transported off the mountain in good condition. He told the crew he was prepared for a difficult night and was grateful to his rescuers.

South Cariboo Search and Rescue believes the teenager’s actions helped him find his family safe and reunited.
