Again in Houston: Fog this morning, strong cold front on the way

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – We see a dense fog early this morning, some places northwest of Houston have a visibility of just 1 mile. It will gradually clear up through the morning. We will get limited sunshine during the day with a peak in the mid 70’s and a 20% chance of a short shower. The next system we are watching is a cold front that will bring widespread rain late Wednesday and early Thursday.

When does the next storm reach Houston?

Our last storm system of 2020 arrives on Wednesday with thunderstorms and a strong cold front on Wednesday evening.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Showers and thunderstorms are possible at any time on Wednesday, but it looks very likely in the evening and overnight. Because this weather system appears to be slowing down, a cold rain could linger at sunrise on Thursday. The current expectations are that most will absorb 1-2 “of rain with insulated patches getting 3-5”. Street flooding is possible Wednesday night.

Will we get heavy weather?

Severe weather is possible, but still unlikely. Windy winds would be our biggest threat if it came again.

What’s the weather forecast for New Year’s Eve in Houston?

New Year’s Eve will bring cold, windy and wet weather for us, but we expect the rain to clear up before midnight. The temperature is likely to remain trapped during the 1940s. By midnight on New Year’s Day, the temperature will probably be in the upper thirties and lower forties, with a wind chill almost freezing.

Wait, you said “freeze.” Will there be snow falling ?!

Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but there’s a chance that snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At the moment, it most likely looks along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact track the storm system takes through the state, so we can not yet completely rule it out for Southeast Texas.

So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is a very very low chance that is not zero, but let your hope not rise yet.
