Again in Houston: Breezy and gentle today, a strong cold front brings widespread rain for NYE

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Tuesday is another warm and pleasant day for Southeast Texas. High temperatures should come out in the mid 70s. We may see a stray shower or two, but most of us will stay dry.

Our next weather system will move to Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. This gives us the chance for widespread rain and will also bring cooler temperatures.

When does the next storm reach Houston?

Our last storm system of 2020 arrives on Wednesday morning with thunderstorms and a strong cold front.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Rain showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday and Thursday with the best chance of rain on Thursday. The current expectations are that most will absorb 1-2 “of rain with insulated patches getting 3-5”. Street flooding will be a possibility.

Will we get heavy weather?

Heavy weather is possible, but the chances seem low at the moment. If we see a severe storm, gusts of wind and big hail will be the biggest threats.

What’s the weather forecast for New Year’s Eve in Houston?

New Year’s Eve will bring cold, windy and wet weather for us, but we expect the rain to clear up before midnight. The temperature is actually expected to drop during the day after the cold front moves in. We have to look at temperatures in the afternoon. By midnight on New Year’s Day, the temperature will probably be in the upper thirties and lower forties, with a wind chill almost freezing.

Wait, you said “freeze.” Will there be snow falling ?!

Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but there’s a chance that snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At the moment, it most likely looks along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact track the storm system takes through the state, so we can not yet completely rule it out for Southeast Texas.

So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is a very very low chance that is not zero, but let your hope not rise yet.
