Eventually, Adobe Flash Player finally died. Not only do you need to have it installed on your Mac, but from January 12, Adobe will actually start making Flash Player content work at all.
We’ll show you how to uninstall Flash Player from your Mac right away.
Flash Player has endured more than just a large part of the problems over the years. It has been criticized for its impact on system performance and battery life, and especially for its numerous high-profile safety issues.
Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs slammed Flash Player in a 2010 open letter titled “Thoughts on Flash.” In it, he explained why the technology will never be supported by iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Now, 11 years later, Flash Player’s time is finally over – and Adobe says all users should remove it immediately “to help protect their systems.” We’ll show you how to remove Flash from your MacOS machine.
How to remove Flash Player from your Mac
Uninstalling Flash Player is not as simple as uninstalling a MacOS app. But it’s easy. Follow these steps:
- Download the Flash Player uninstaller for Mac OS X 10.6 and later.
- Make sure all browsers installed on your Mac are closed.
- Open up the Flash Player uninstaller and click Remove.
- Wait until the removal installer confirms that Flash Player has been removed.
- Manually delete the following guides manually:
/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player
/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player
You now need to restart your Mac. You can then visit Adobe’s website to confirm that Flash Player has been removed from your system; simply click the “Check Now” button on this page.
Disable Flash in your browser
Some third-party browsers, including Chrome and Firefox, are built-in with Flash Player. You must ensure that it is eliminated manually.
It’s easy to use Firefox, which has stopped sending Flash Player support with its version 85 version. Updating the latest version of the browser is therefore sufficient to ensure that Flash Player does not work.
If you’re using Chrome or Microsoft Edge on your Mac, follow these steps:
- In a browser window, click on the three dots to the right of the menu bar.
- Click on Institutions.
- Under Privacy and security, click Site settings.
- Under Contents, click Flash.
- Activate the Prevent Websites from Running Flash option.
And that’s it, your Mac is now free of Flash Player. Hurray!
