Adobe ends support for Adobe Flash Player today

The ending is officially here for Adobe Flash. As previously announced, Adobe has confirmed that it will no longer support Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and it will block Flash content from launching in Flash Player from January 12, 2021.

The font has been at the end of Adobe Flash for years. In 2017, Adobe announced its plans to discontinue support for the Flash plug-in by the end of 2020, and this is now keeping its promise.

As Adobe has been working for the past three years to finish Flash, Apple’s message has been consistent. At the time of Adobe’s announcement on its WebKit blog, the company emphasized that the transition to Flash for Apple users began in 2010:

Apple users have been experiencing the Internet for some time without Flash. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch never supported Flash. For the Mac, the transition from Flash began in 2010 when Flash was no longer pre-installed. Today, when users install Flash, it stays out by default. Safari requires explicit approval on each site before using the Flash plugin.

But, of course, the relationship between Apple and Adobe regarding Flash has been strained for years, since Steve Jobs published his well-known “Thoughts on Flash” audience in 2010 to address the then-critical point for iPhones. and iPads as computer replacements.

I wanted to write down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics can better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as primarily business-driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technological issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in reality the opposite is true.

In the letter, Jobs lamented Flash over its many flaws, including things like reliability, security, battery life and performance. While Adobe at the time disputed Jobs’ claims, Apple never brought Flash to the iPhone and iPad, and Flash’s downfall began shortly thereafter.

Adobe has a website dedicated to providing information about end-of-life plans for Flash, and says users should immediately remove Flash from their computers to help protect their systems.

As Adobe will no longer support Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and Adobe will release Flash content in Flash Player from January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends that all users remove Flash Player immediately to protect their systems. Some users may still see reminders from Adobe to remove Flash Player from their system.
