Adding a pass rusher and versatility on corner is how the Browns can win free agency: Dan Labbe

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Winning free agencies is no longer something the Browns are trying to do. If you win matches, all the off-season loses its luster.

Free agencies are nice, but good teams refine their schedules instead of making them again. The concept is still an event, but to choose in the 20s, the needle does not move exactly like the attention that the top of the concept brings.

The Browns’ big splash will come when they decide on their own players. Extensions for Denzel Ward, Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and others are on the table out of season. Let teams like the Jets and Jaguars make the news for the next few months. The Browns are finally set to be main producers from September to, hopefully, February.

All of us involved with our Browns coverage reveal what we think an ideal free agency experience would look like. Today is my turn, and I start – and stay – on the defensive. Here are the rest of the posts:

Here’s how I think the browns (relatively speaking) can win free agency:

Trey Hendrickson, defensive end, 3 years, $ 11 million / year

Hendrickson is the dynamic pace the Browns have been looking for on the other side of Myles Garrett, and if they can take the money they paid Olivier Vernon last year to bring Hendrickson to Cleveland, it’s a perfect marriage.

We’ve done this before, but going back to the 2017 draft process, Hendrickson’s 40-yard, 20-yard split and 10-yard split were about the same as Garrett at the poaching. Why does it matter? Because Hendrickson has only one year of major production, but his athletic profile tells us it’s repeatable.

In his first year as an appetizer, Hendrickson delivered 13.5 bags, according to Pro Football Focus was the second on the Saints under pressure, and was the Saints’ highest rating.

Troy Hill, cornerback, 2 years, $ 6.5 million a year

I suspect the Browns will address the corner of the first two days of the draft, and good news about Greedy Williams adds more options in a place where you can never have enough healthy bodies. Brian Poole and Mike Hilton are both a strong option if the Browns want to clinch the position of the lock, but versatility is the name of the game here, as we saw with the signing of Kevin Johnson last season.

Hill turns 30 before the start of the season, so it’s not a long pass, but his ability to play from the outside and inside makes him valuable.

BJ Goodson, linebacker, 1 year, $ 3 million

The goal here was to find an undervalued linebacker who wouldn’t cost too much, and that may be the undervalued linebacker the Browns brought in last season. The Browns may be able to hand over Goodson’s duties to second-year linebacker Jacob Phillips in 2021, but it will not hurt the third round that showed flashes last year to link another season with Goodson.

Maybe Andrew Berry, Browns, surprises us all and he spends for a linebacker, but there’s no indication yet that this is a priority position in this defense.
