Adams Co. officials rescue animals from ‘storage’

ADAMS COUNTY, Ohio – More than a dozen animals have been rescued from what Adams County officials call a “storage case.”

Adams County Dog Warden officials said the animals, including dogs and chickens, were found in a garage over the weekend after the garage owner died. After the dog keeper found the animals, they called the Humane Society for help.

Jessica Huxmann of the Humane Society of Adams County said the smell of ammonia and urine makes it at first react almost impossible to breathe indoors.

Inside the house, the garbage was piled up nearly five feet high, some animals stood between eight and twenty inches from what officials say are newspapers and feces, and three malnourished chihuahuas roamed free. Three sick puppies were found outside the house.

Many of the animals go to the vet on Monday to catch their shots and to determine their general health. Despite their living conditions, many of the dogs are said to be friendly to humans.

Huxmann said the Humane Society offers assistance to pet owners to prevent such situations from occurring.

“There are organizations that can help,” Huxmann said. “We offer free food to people who are struggling to feed a pet. If they have to house a pet, there are organizations like us that can help house a pet.”

Contact the Humane Society of Adams County if you are interested in caring for some of these animals once they have been cleaned for breeding, or if you would like to donate to help their veterinarians.
