Active COVID cases, hospitalizations get bigger than Massachusetts vaccinations open to residents 16 years and older

Active COVID cases in Massachusetts increased slightly Monday, from 34,553 on Sunday to 34,675, according to the latest Department of Public Health data.

State health officials on Monday confirmed another 1,236 new COVID-19 cases. According to the Department of Public Health, it is based on 38,921 new molecular tests.

Officials also announced another 18 COVID-related deaths, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 17,135.

The seven-day average positive test on Monday was 2.04%, compared to 1.97% the previous day.

Since the pandemic began, officials have confirmed 632,707 total COVID-19 cases across the state.

The number of COVID patients currently being admitted to hospital on Monday is 705, up from 701 the previous day. Of these, 163 are in intensive care, and 95 are intubated, data show.

So far, a total of 5,130,458 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in Massachusetts, and 2,059,487 residents have now been fully vaccinated.

The Department of Public Health on Wednesday released new data confirming the number of infections among children under 15 years of age. In the past two weeks, 1,235 cases have been confirmed in children under four; 1,469 infections were confirmed in children between the ages of 5 and 9; and according to the latest data from the Department of Public Health, 1816 infections were confirmed in children between 10 and 14 years of age.

There were 2,696 teens between the ages of 15 and 19 who came down with COVID in the past two weeks. According to DPH, 5,942 cases were confirmed among 20-year-olds.

The number of cities and towns in Massachusetts at high risk for COVID spread is 59 according to the latest data from Thursday, which is lower than 77 the previous week.

The latest data comes the day Massachusetts opened COVID vaccinations for all residents 16 years and older.
