A hacking group demands $ 50 million from Acer, Bleeping Computer reported, which is apparently one of the biggest ransomware claims to date. According to Bleeping Computer, the attackers may have gained access to the Taiwanese computer manufacturer’s network through a Microsoft Exchange vulnerability. The REvil group that carried out a ransomware attack on Travelex last year is also believed to be behind the Acer breach.
Bleeping Computer said REvil is giving Acer until March 28 to pay the ransom, otherwise it is leaking the information it claims to have collected. Microsoft recently released several security updates to resolve vulnerabilities for use found in the Exchange software, but it was not immediately clear whether the Acer violation was connected.
Acer did not immediately respond to a request for comment The edge Saturday, but tell Bleeping Computer in a statement that “Companies like ours are constantly being attacked, and we have recently reported abnormal situations to the relevant law enforcement and data protection authorities in several countries.”
Acer did not acknowledge in its statement that it was the victim of a ransomware attack, but added that there was an ‘ongoing investigation’ that prevented the company from commenting further due to security concerns.
