The California Department of Public Health said Wednesday that a vaccine issue at the Oakland Coliseum resulted in 6,300 people receiving smaller doses of Pfizer vaccine than recommended.
The department said that despite this finding, people who are underage need not do anything but get a second chance.
“Although the recommended dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is 0.3 ml, the CDC has determined that any dose of 0.15 ml or greater is safe and that the dose should not be repeated to treat people against COVID-19. does not protect, “Ali Ali Bay, a spokesman for the Department of Public Health, wrote in an email. “In this case, some individuals may have received a dose of 0.22 ml, which is well within the range set out by the CDC.”
The less than recommended doses were the result of a syringe not taking out all the medicine. The problem occurred in people who received the vaccine on Sunday 28 February after 16:30 and on Monday 1 March between 08:00 and 15:00.
“The dosage difference was corrected by on-site staff on Monday afternoon and CDPH took additional steps for training and quality assurance as a preventative measure,” Bay wrote in her email.
The state notifies those who received the smaller dose by email or by mail. “In consultation with vaccine experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Pfizer, we determined that some individuals who received a vaccine during this time may have received slightly less than the recommended dose,” the letter reads.
This news comes after two anonymous sources told KTVU last week that thousands of recipients of vaccines had been under-dosed and the state said the claims were false.
