Abilene Christian beats Texas on late free throws for first NCAA Division I tournament in school history

Abilene Christian delivered the final big upset of the first round of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament on Saturday night, defeating Texas 53-52.

It was the first 14-seeded Wildcats’ first Division I tournament in the history of the school.

Joe Pleasant crashed on the final ride of Abilene Christian and nailed the game free kicks to chase the Wildcats up.

Pleasant finished with 11 points and seven rebounds along with the most important shots of his entire life. Coryon Mason was the only other player of Abilene Christian in double figures and finished with 11 points and two rebounds.

Andrew Jones in Texas hit an incredible three-pointer to leave the Longhorns with 16 seconds left. But the Longhorns could not stay with 1.2 seconds left and lost the game.

Jones finished the game with 13 points and five assists.

Kai Jones has 11 points and Jericho Sims 10 points.

Abilene Christian was successful on Division II, but never had much success on Division I until Saturday night against Longhorns.

Nr. 3 Texas was the Big 12 champion and was in the tournament for the first time since 2018. The team has not been in the second round of the tournament since 2015.

Abilene Christian now plays the no. 11 UCLA in the second round. The Bruins beat number 6 BYU in the first round.
