MADISON, Wis. Nearly three months after giving birth while in a coma and fighting COVID-19, a UW Health patient was finally reunited with her family, including her newborn daughter, whom she had never met, Lucy.

According to a spokesperson for UW Health, Kelsey Townsend was discharged from the university hospital on Thursday after a month-long battle with COVID-19.

Townsend was nine months pregnant in October 2020 when COVID-19 was diagnosed in her. She gave birth to Lucy on November 4, 2020 while in a medically induced coma.

After giving birth to Lucy, Townsend’s health deteriorated and she was placed on life support systems.

In December 2020, UW Health doctors said Townsend would likely need a double lung transplant. Her husband made the news known to her on Christmas Eve.

A UW Health spokeswoman said a few days after she was placed on the transplant waiting list, Townsend’s condition began to improve. She was finally pulled out of a fan in mid-January.

After Townsend was discharged from the hospital last week, she was reunited with her husband and four children, including Lucy.
