A motorcyclist who died on I-95 clocked 124 km per hour and ‘split the lanes’ to flee soldiers

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. Police are investigating a fatal crash with a motorcyclist who they say ran away from a soldier twice before chasing a pickup truck on Interstate 95 in Fairfax County on Easter morning.

Virginia State Police officials said a soldier clocked a motorcycle with a clock speed of 124 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-495.

“The soldier pulled in behind the motorcycle and activated his lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” officials said. “But the motorcycle sped away even faster and a chase was started. As the motorcycle approached the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the troop ended the chase.”

Officials said the same troop was on the I-495 radar around 10:20 a.m. when the same motorcyclist passed by.

When the soldier tried to pull over the motorcyclist, the driver, according to state police, quickly pulled up and took the exit onto I-95 south.

Officials said that when the motorcycle on I-95 began splitting the lanes, the troops stopped their pursuit.

Then, around 10:30 a.m., troops received a call about an accident involving two vehicles along I-95 south, not far from the exit to Route 1.

“When troops arrived on the scene, they recognized the motorcycle as the car that had been chased earlier,” officials said. “Based on witness statements, the motorcycle put a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in the back. The impact of the accident caused the motorcyclist to be thrown out of the vehicle and the motorcycle caught fire.”

Troops applied first aid, but according to officials, the motorcyclist died at the scene.

His name has not yet been released as authorities are still notifying his next of kin.

The driver of the truck was transported with minor injuries.

“The accident investigation is ongoing,” state police officials said.
