(CNN) – After a Canadian teenager went missing while on a snowmobile, he managed to build a snow cave to stay in until he was found.
According to South Cariboo Search and Rescue, a 17-year-old man in British Columbia, who has not yet been named, built a snow cave for himself where he could hide after being separated from his group.
On Saturday around 6:15 p.m., 100 Mile House Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were notified of an overdue snowmobile.
Family and friends of the teenager returned to a parking lot, but according to a RCMP news release, he never showed up.
Some of the party stayed on the hill and started searching, while others departed to warn South Cariboo Search and Rescue, who contacted 100 Mile House RCMP. South Cariboo SAR finally located the teenager and found him in good condition, RCMP said in its release.
“This young man did everything right after things went wrong,” SAR wrote in a Facebook post in which he praised the teenager. ‘He was separated from his group and after several failed attempts to get out of the area again, as he entered it and did not know the site and surroundings, he parked his sleigh in an open area, to a nearby area and built for himself an incredible snow cave to spend the night. ‘
The report continued: ‘When our team members ran into him, he was in the shelter with food and water. This young man made our task a little less difficult by staying in place and having knowledge about winter survival. ‘
The 100 Mile House RCMP thanked the South Cariboo SAR team for bringing the search to another positive outcome.
“We in the south of Cariboo are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of well-trained volunteers to assist in times of need,” said RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson wrote in a statement.
