Chicago police said 29-year-old Tracey Thomas Jr. was arrested Saturday afternoon after he allegedly shot at five police officers and struck one in the hand.
At one point, Thomas was blocked and crisis negotiators called in, the CPD said.
The gun used in the attack was recovered at the scene, police said.
Police said the suspect will appear in the bond court on Sunday. CNN is trying to determine if Thomas has a lawyer.
CPD spokesman Tom Ahern tweeted on Saturday night: “Thank you very much that our wounded officer was treated and discharged from the hospital. Another vivid reminder of the inherent dangers that Chicago police officers face every day.”
Chicago Superintendent David O. Brown praised the officers involved.
“I am proud of our SWAT team members and officers who peacefully resolved a critical incident with the surrender of the suspect and a firearm that was repaired. Brown said Sunday that 20 Chicago officials have been shot or shot so far this year.
“This past week has been a strong reminder of how dangerous the work of a #ChicagoPolice officer is, with three of our officers wounded by gunfire in three separate incidents,” he said on Twitter.
