A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck about 4 km south of Muir beach shortly before 06:00 on Thursday.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was detected at a depth of almost 9 kilometers below the surface.
People said they felt the rumble in San Francisco, Marin, Oakland and San Rafael on social media.
