A Louisiana police officer was shot dead while escorting a suspect from the basketball game

A police officer was shot dead in New Orleans on Friday night, allegedly while trying to guide the suspect away from a high school basketball game.

The suspected armed man was apparently in custody.

According to NOLA.com, the murdered officer was identified as Martinus Mitchum (38).

Teams from high school Carver and Warren Easton met in a playoff game at Carver High School when the suspect tried to enter, reports FOX 8 of New Orleans.

The match was stopped after the shooting, reports NOLA.com.

The officer worked as a security officer for the game, reports WWL-TV.

According to NOLA.com, the suspect was arguing with an employee at the school and police tried to intervene and remove the suspect from the building.

At one point, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer in the chest, the report said.

According to a WWL photographer who was at the scene, several shots were fired.

Deputies from the sheriff of Orleans Parish, who arrived at the scene, found the officer suffering from a gunshot wound and had him transported to University Medical Center, where he later died, reports FOX 8.

The killed officer was a member of the force at Tulane University in the city and also served as city constable, Shaun Ferguson, superintendent of the New Orleans police station, told FOX 8.

Authorities said the shooting was still under investigation.
