The 49ers have a horrible poker face.
We all see that they hate their hand. Everyone knows they want to send off Jimmy Garoppolo and trade Matthew Stafford, the Detroit Lions full-back. Which bothers both movements.
Suppose the 49ers get a lot for Stafford – maybe the Lions swap him for a second round in 2021 and a second round in 2022 – and the 49ers accept the offer. What would happen to Garoppolo’s trading value in that case?
It would disappear.
Suddenly, the 49ers would have two expensive veteran backs on their rankings, and they would be over the cap. One quarter will have to go – every team will understand that. So teams would just wait for the 49ers to release Garoppolo. Forget the presentation of the 49ers draft picks
And let’s say the 49ers get a lot for Garoppolo – maybe the Patriots will offer him their choice in the second round in 2021 – and the 49ers accept the offer. What would happen to Stafford’s trading value in that case?
It will drop a rocket.
Suddenly, the 49ers would have no quarterback under contract – they would be desperate for Stafford. And the Lions would know that. They can therefore increase their asking price after a first-and-second choice, or two first-round choices. Who knows?
It seems to me the 49ers need to acquire Stafford and download Garoppolo at the same time. In the same agreement.
I’m talking about a three-way trade.
The 49ers could send Jimmy Garoppolo to the Patriots or to another team. And that team could send a second round to the Lions. The 49ers could send a second round to the Lions. And the Lions can send the 49ers Stafford.
Who would say no?
