A gang of squirrels terrorizes people in New York City – BGR

  • A Queens neighborhood in NYC seems to be an excellent place for squirrel attacks, and some residents physically touch the animals.
  • Photos of one human / squirrel fight show snow soaked with blood.
  • The residents do not know why the squirrels suddenly became violent, but they try to avoid it until things change.

We are all more than a little stressed these days. This is exactly what happens when the world is in the midst of a deadly pandemic that has changed everyone’s lives in so many ways. Maybe our anxious, excited attitude is shaking off Mother Nature because it looks like squirrels have openly started attacking people in NYC.

As the WCBS TV subsidiary of CBS reports, squirrel attacks have taken striking regularity in one Queens area, with several people claiming to have physically touched the animals, sometimes resulting in serious injuries.

A Queens resident, Micheline Frederick, says a squirrel attacked her while she was standing on her own front. The animal apparently climbed on her leg and started biting her. Frederick, who had bruises and cuts after the attack, said her fingers were ‘chewed’ by the squirrel and it refused to let go. When the animal finally gave in, the ground was full of blood.

“We are struggling in the snow and there is blood everywhere and my fingers are chewing and it will not come loose,” Frederick told WCBS-TV. “Eventually it just stopped and there I was a big bloody mess.”

And Frederick is not the only victim of the squirrel attacks. Other residents expressed the strange behavior of the animals and said they repeatedly tried to climb their legs and even jumped from a mailbox to attack. One resident said she was just walking to her driveway when a squirrel jumped on her and bit her on the arm. She managed to get the animal off her before it caused any additional damage.

This is a very strange set of circumstances, and although your first thought may be that the animals must be rabid, it is noteworthy that rabies in squirrels is quite rare. The animals may be rabid, but they will not know for sure before they can be caught. Meanwhile, some of those bitten by the squirrels were treated as a precaution for rabies.

The victims of the squirrel attacks rented a trap to capture and relocate the animals, but at the time of the report, none of the squirrels took the bait. For now, locals will have to be extra vigilant if they see any of the insects or try to avoid them altogether. Maybe they get a little friendlier once the year is over. After all, 2020 was difficult for all of us.
