The chief financial officer of Twitter says that Apple ‘compares playing field’ with privacy changes by iOS 14

iOS 14 has made several privacy changes that are now becoming mandatory for developers, which has led some large companies to be dissatisfied with Apple. However, Ned Segal, chief financial officer of Twitter, said he was not worried about these changes as he believes it could even have a positive impact on smaller businesses.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference (via CNBC) on Wednesday, Segal said Twitter feels confident about the privacy changes in iOS 14, which includes a new option that does not allow apps to detect users, unless they log in manually.

According to Segal, much of the data collected by Twitter is not linked to a device ID, so he believes the company will not be affected by the new privacy options in iOS 14. ‘We feel really good about our ability to to take advantage of the combination, “he said.

What’s more, Segal sees this as an opportunity for Twitter and other smaller players to compete fairly with big companies like Facebook – although he did not mention Mark Zuckerberg’s platform. The chief financial officer of Twitter claims that these changes that Apple has implemented in iOS 14 are comparing the playing field, which he says would have a positive impact on the industry:

IDFA is going to level the playing field in a way. We are in an industry where it was much better than Twitter to use all the data available to them, from the device ID to what people did on other sites. If we all have the same set of new challenges that we have to face, the playing field will have a very interesting impact on the wider industry.

Segal also said that Twitter does not want to be “in a hurry IDFA”, which indicates that the company will wait to see what happens before users are asked to enable the tracking option on iOS. Despite Segal’s comments, Twitter confirmed last month that the company expects a “modest impact” on its revenue this year due to the privacy changes of iOS 14.

The new Tracking Transparency App will be available to all users from iOS 14.5, which is currently available to developers and users registered in the Apple Beta software application.

Application tracking transparency is a new feature that requires applications to request permission from users before being tracked on other applications and websites. Users will also be able to see in the iOS settings app which apps have asked permission to detect it.
