Mr Potato Head, the classic Hasbro toy who presumably lived the first 70 years of his life as a tuber, will soon be renamed with the gender-neutral ‘Potato Head’ moniker.
The Associated Press reported Thursday that the new name appears on the packaging, which begins later this year.

According to Hasbro, Hasbro allegedly claimed that Mr. Potato Head, who regularly works with Mrs. Potato Head is for sale, needs a ‘modern make-up’. Both mr. And Mrs. Potato heads have been categorized under their original names on Hasbro’s website since Thursday afternoon.
A Hasbro representative did not immediately respond to a request for further information from Fox News

Kimberly Boyd, senior vice president of global brands and general manager at Hasbro, told Fast Company that the new brand reflects our modern times.
“Culture has evolved,” Boyd said. “Children want to be able to present their own experiences. The way the brand currently exists – with the ‘Mr.’ and ‘Mrs. – is restrictive in terms of gender identity and family structure. ‘
Boyd added that Hasbro hopes the renaming will enable children to make “small potato families” as they see fit.

The toy that finally Mr. Potato head would have been originally conceived in the early 1940s by inventor George Lerner, who was born in Brooklyn, who initially only planned to market the push-button-style face and body parts (consumers would supply their own vegetables to insert the pieces ). He first sold the idea to a grain company, which planned to use the pieces as prizes, before the Hassenfeld brothers heard of Lerner’s idea and bought it back, according to The National Toy Hall of Fame. The toy soon began production and in 1952 under its official new name: Mr. Potato Head, debuted.
