CenterPoint warns customers of incorrect emails and claims they owe thousands of dollars

CenterPoint warns customers of incorrect emails and claims they owe thousands of dollars

February 18, 2021 13:37 by NewsDesk
CenterPoint warns its customers about a false email claiming they owe thousands of dollars on their account.

A viewer who shared a photo of her email said her average bill is $ 52, but this time her email shows she owes $ 202 102.16. It may be noteworthy that the amount begins with 2021 and ends with 0216. February 16, 2021 was the date of the coldest point during this historic winter storm.

ABC13 contacts CenterPoint about the situation. CenterPoint initially replied that they were investigating the situation.

They added: “Customers do not owe this amount. We will update our customers and media as soon as we have a resolution.”

Just two hours later, a company spokesman told ABC13 the emails were accidentally sent “due to a recent technical issue caused by the power outage in the Houston area.”

They promised to update customers later this afternoon.

Earlier this week, Houston police warned residents about people pretending to be CenterPoint Energy workers to enter customers’ homes.

‘We have reports of mockers imitating [CenterPoint Energy] employees to gain access to homes to victimize residents, “Chief Art Acevedo wrote. The repair of disruptions in our area due to severe weather does not have to go into residences. “

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas on Tuesday warned that scammers are also going on social media to prey on the defenseless and asking energy customers to text their private account numbers.

ERCOT said they do not need any information from customers affected by the outages to turn on the power again.
