As winter storm warnings and winter weather advice most of Utah is in place Tuesday night through Wednesday, schools are evaluating whether they will hold classes in person.
So far, the Canyons School District has announced that it will only conduct distance education.
An email sent to parents and guardians reads:
- Wednesday 17 February 2021 will be a distance education day for all students due to the expected heavy snow and dangerous road conditions. CSD listens to Utah transportation officials’ recommendation not to travel on roads Wednesday morning. This means that all schools and district offices will be closed for the day, but teaching will continue in accordance with the new state rules that allow school districts to consider “snow days” as a distance education day. Instead of leaving classes, it is important for both students to maintain the continuity of instruction and families through the need to adjust their schedules to accommodate makeup days, which can disrupt holidays and summer plans. This announcement is for one day only. Parents will be notified if distance learning is extended by additional days. Consult our website if you have any questions www.canyonsdistrict.org [track.spe.schoolmessenger.com].
- Expectations for emergency closure and distance learning:
- If the weather conditions are predicted, teachers will work with students to make sure they have the materials and assignments they need to learn from home.
- On distance learning days, elementary students will work independently with a parent or guardian to complete the assignments and learning expectations communicated to their teacher each week through instruction packs or by subscribing to the Canvas learning portal of CSD.
- Middle and high school students will report to each of their classes at the Canvas dashboard and work through their normal course schedule.
- Teachers will be available by e-mail on distance learning days and contact students via Canvas and Zoom or Google Meet.
- Extracurricular activities – sporting events and exercises, after-school tutorials and theater exercises and performances – will be canceled unless road conditions improve sufficiently to keep such activities safe.
- We understand that bad weather can cause power outages and internet disruptions. If you lose power or WiFi access at home, contact your teacher or school to report the interruption and continue with previously assigned learning activities.
