North Texas Skylines Darken to Save Electricity – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

The Dallas skyline was significantly darker Monday night as the state of emergency continued, and in Fort Worth, the outdoor lights went out on at least two buildings in an effort to save electricity.

Millions of Texans are without power because the temperature dropped to single digit early Monday morning.

Controlled power outages were initiated by the Texas Electric Reliability Board. The ERCOT council described the interruptions as a “last resort to preserve the reliability of the electrical system as a whole”, adding that utilities have the task of determining how to reduce demand for the system.

NBC 5 viewers asked us why Downtown Dallas is still lit up. At one point Sunday night with a Valentine’s Day theme.

“How about turning off all these electronic billboards and the neon lights in downtown buildings,” David told NBC 5.

“I noticed the buildings in downtown Dallas were lit up, but I was asked to turn off lights and lower the temp in our house,” viewer Sharon said. “Isn’t that a double standard?”

There will be fewer lights Monday night if the state of emergency persists.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson tweeted that downtown Dallas, Inc. is asking downtown buildings to turn off their outdoor lights Monday night to save energy.

Reunion Tower confirmed that it would not be lit and “any other non-essential lights and electricity consuming equipment would be turned off.”

Fort Worth also dimmed its skyline Tuesday night. The lights went out on the Bank of America Tower and Wells Fargo Tower in the middle of downtown.

Amid an emergency in Texas, it was shut down Tuesday night in the Bank of America Tower and the Well Fargo Tower in downtown.
