North Carolina: 12-year-old shooter, death intruder after armed robbery wounds 73-year-old victim

GOLDSBORO, NC – North Carolina police are investigating after a 12-year-old shot at two masked intruders and fatally wounded one of them after forcing them into an apartment and shooting the boy’s grandmother.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting in a residential area around 1 a.m. Saturday. Police arrived at the scene to locate a 73-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Shortly afterwards, a man who was also shot was found at a nearby intersection.

The victim and the suspect were both transported to Wayne UNC Health Care Hospital. The man, identified as Khalil Herring, 19, of Goldsboro, died from his injuries.

The investigation revealed that two people entered the house, demanded money and shot the woman in the leg. During the robbery, a 12-year-old shot the intruders with a firearm in self-defense and made them flee, investigators said. Evidence suggests that Haring was one of the two masked intruders and was shot during the incident.

“They came into the house, I opened the door, I opened it, and they came in. … One man had a gun. They just put me on the ground,” Randolph Bunn said. the woman’s son, said. Bunn is also the great-uncle of the child who fired the gun.

The woman was in the kitchen when the robbers confronted her. “I do not know why they shot her,” Bunn said.

According to Goldsboro police, the charges against the 12-year-old are not expected, but the investigation is continuing.

The intruder “just shot his grandmother,” Bunn said. “He would have shot him too, he would have shot me too. He would have killed us all. ‘

The wounded woman was taken to the local medical center where she is likely to be detained until Monday, Bunn said.
