Two weeks after a crowd of Trump supporters piled up with allegations of election fraud ahead of the January 6 Capitol riot, GOP rep. Madison Cawthorn on Saturday night is trying to restore his position on the presidential election – only to have his whole argument fall apart in a spectacular way.
Under pressure from CNN’s Pamela Brown to explain what evidence motivated him to challenge the election results in the first place, Cawthorn visibly struggled to put together a coherent argument.
The things I did not object to on behalf of the election were things like the Dominion voting machines changing the ballot papers, or these U-Haul trucks being ransacked for Joe Biden as president. The thing I objected to were things like, as I said in the state of Wisconsin, especially in the city of Madison … there was an appointed official in the city who was against the will of the state legislature and ballot papers created, which are basically ballot papers that took place in the parks, ”he said.
After Brown noted that everything Cawthorn had mentioned had already been sued in court and thrown by Trump-appointed judges, the 25-year-old representative went into a vague chatter.
‘I do believe specifically … and this is the one I debated on behalf of the House floor … in Wisconsin, which was never heard because they rejected it because they stand. “Now I do not believe this is a concrete way to dismiss it,” he said.
Cawthorn was asked to give specific examples of fraud and finds himself in a corner.
“Like I said, that’s not why I contested the election,” he only dug deeper.
“So, you wanted to cast millions of votes without actually seeing concrete evidence of fraud?” Ask Brown. “Because that’s what you did when you contested the election.”
After briefly swearing in silence, Cawthorn replied, “I do not agree with you,” and insisted that he only contested the election to “keep the Constitution.”
Bizar, after Brown pointed out that Cawthorn’s own North Carolina state also changed election laws in connection with the coronavirus pandemic – something the GOP representative in Wisconsin subjected – he admitted he had no idea about the laws in his home state.
‘I’m not really aware of the laws that have been changed within North Carolina. “I believe we had a very safe and very secure election here,” he said.
While Cawthorn joined other Republicans in blocking the certification of Biden’s victory, as well as after the deadly riots on January 6, and even praised Trump supporters gathering at the Capitol that day for the ‘fight’ they had had to stop ‘All the fraud’ in the election, towards the end of Saturday night’s interview, his whole story crashed around him.
“Yes, I think I would say that the election was not fraudulent,” he told Brown. “The Constitution has allowed us to push back as much as possible and I have done so to the constitutional limits I had at my disposal, so now I would say that Joseph R. Biden is our president.”
