90 of 95 tests in a Michigan prison for the highly contagious British COVID variant came back positive

Ionia, Michigan Michigan officials said on Tuesday at least 90 cases of the highly contagious COVID-19 variant first identified in the UK have been confirmed in a jail here. Department of Health and Human Services officials said only five of the 95 tests given did not yield positive results.

In addition, the results of another 100 tests of the Bellamy Creek correctional facility were still late by Tuesday night.

A total of two of the 90 people who tested positive were inmates. The other two were staff members, officials said.

Tests were started in the prison after it was found that the employee had the variant.

But officials pointed out that the number of positive COVIDA results began to decline once the daily testing began.

Additional precautions against COVID were introduced in the facility as soon as the variant was found there, officials added. The daily testing was one of the new steps.
