8Bitdo Pro 2 Administrator Impressions

8Bitdo’s range of third-party controllers has gone from strength to strength, and the Pro 2 gamepad is the latest addition. At first glance, it looks almost identical to the Pro + we tested here in detail, but there is the notable addition of two new button buffers under each controller arm, which adds a few customizable buttons, ideal for macros and itchy trigger fingers .

Like the Pro +, the 8Bitdo Pro 2 works with Nintendo’s Switch, Windows, macOS, Android, and Raspberry Pi, and although the new controller has a play color scheme inspired by PlayStation 1, it still borrows heavily from Nintendo controllers. the past.

There is still a cross-shaped D-path on the left (something you can miss on your Switch JoyCons), start and select buttons in the middle and circular A-, B-, X- and Y-buttons that are clearer this time marked. It’s 2021, so of course there are also double analog sticks. The Pro 2 also includes a profile profile switch button that lets you switch between three different input configurations without launching the companion app – now available in iOS and Android versions, in addition to PC and Mac.

The Pro 2 has a removable battery pack that you can swap for AA batteries if you can never recharge it through the USB-C port. I did not perform a full battery review, but you can expect about 20 hours of playtime. It’s a solid controller, and 8Bitdo has added a textured finish that makes the Pro 2 feel a little more premium than its predecessor. However, the most important upgrades are at the back.

I accidentally became the review button reviewer here at Engadget, but I’m not mad about it – I wish all controllers had it. The rear paddles of the Pro 2 blend into the body of the controller, and although they are a bit shallower than trigger buttons elsewhere, they are perfectly placed and sensitive enough to reassign the L2 and R2 buttons. You will need to use the above smartphone app to assign features to these new buttons.

8Bitdo’s controller app is more useful this time around, because the extra controller buttons are a blank canvas for your macro settings, whether it’s a shortcut button for your most difficult move in Street Fighter, or even automatic menu entry if you An RPG and level up while you sleep / make a grilled cheese.

Instead of the easily forgettable button combinations needed to sync the Pro + controller with each platform, the Pro 2 has a switch to switch between all the different supported platforms. Unfortunately, it still does not contain iOS, and if you are thinking of using it as your go-to switch controller, please note that there is no NFC support or HD Rumble – features that Nintendo does not exactly did not print.

But it’s small quarrels for a controller that offers customizable back pads and costs $ 50. If you’re trying to get a second controller (or you might be looking for an upgrade for your Stadia habit), the Pro 2 is a compelling case.
